• ​The Council of the League of Arab States issued Resolution 663 at the summit held in Nouakchott on 25 July 2016 to emphasise the priority of development work in Arab countries.

    In its third paragraph, the resolution calls for assigning the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States to establish a mechanism to support the implementation of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda in Arab countries.

    Based on the resolution, the Economic and Social Council issued on 16 February 2017 Resolution 2134 approving the establishment of the Arab Committee for the Follow-up on the Implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals 2030. The committee was tasked with submitting its recommendations to the Economic and Social Council.

    The committee comprises senior officials and representatives of member states concerned with sustainable development in order to support the implementation of the SDGs in the Arab countries. The committee holds two meetings annually, in June and December, upon the invitation of the General Secretariat, prior to the meeting of the Economic and Social Council.
