  • Aboul Gheit meets the head of the Syrian opposition negotiating body

    ​          Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary General of the League of Arab States, met with the delegation of the Syrian opposition negotiating body, headed by Dr. Nasr Al-Hariri, on the sidelines of the 74th session of the United Nations General Assembly, the meeting dealt with the latest developments in the Syrian crisis with a focus on the formation of the Constitutional Committee announced the day before yesterday, and the potential that could be seized to end this long-standing conflict.

    Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary General of the League of Arab States, met with the delegation of the Syrian opposition negotiating body, headed by Dr. Nasr Al-Hariri, on the sidelines of the 74th session of the United Nations General Assembly, the meeting dealt with the latest developments in the Syrian crisis with a focus on the formation of the Constitutional Committee announced the day before yesterday, and the potential that could be seized to end this long-standing conflict.

    An official source at the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States said that Aboul Gheit listened to a presentation by the Chairman of the Negotiating Committee on the next steps of the Constitutional Committee, which is expected to start its work next October. The source added that Aboul Gheit expressed to Nasr Al-Hariri his cautious optimism regarding the announcement of the formation of the Constitutional Committee, stressing the importance that all parties in Syria to adorn the spirit of national responsibility and transcend narrow interests in order to make the committee work succeed.

    The source stressed that the Secretary-General appreciated the opening up of the negotiating body to the political solution to the Syrian crisis, expressing his hope that the regime would be equally open and willing to make the work of the Constitutional Committee a success as a first step towards the restoration of Syrian constitutional institutions on a legitimate basis that is acceptable both internally and externally. Adding that a political solution is what  will preserve the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Syrian homeland, and opens the door to the reconstruction of what was destroyed by almost nine years of war.
