Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, met with Mr. Simon Coffini, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ireland, on the sidelines of the 74th session of the United Nations General Assembly, the two sides discussed the latest regional developments with a focus on the Palestinian issue and the risks of regional instability in the Gulf.
Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, met with Mr. Simon Coffini, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ireland, on the sidelines of the 74th session of the United Nations General Assembly, the two sides discussed the latest regional developments with a focus on the Palestinian issue and the risks of regional instability in the Gulf.
During the meeting, Aboul Gheit expressed his gratitude to the Irish stances regarding the Palestinian issue, especially the support and donations provided by Dublin to UNRWA. An official source at the Secretariat of the League of Arab States said that the Irish minister renewed his country's support for UNRWA, rejecting all attempts to undermine the agency's work and eliminate its services to millions of Palestinian refugees, adding that Aboul Gheit thanked the Irish minister for his country's generous donations to UNRWA, the latest which was $ 2 million that Dublin presented to the agency this week.
Aboul Gheit and the Irish Minister stressed the centrality of the two-state solution as the only way to end the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, and they agreed on the importance of following up the ministerial consultation meeting held in Dublin last February in order to strengthen the international consensus in favor of the two-state solution and the determinants of the peace process consistent with International law and principles of international legitimacy. The source added that Aboul Gheit expressed to the Irish minister the League's support for Dublin's international moves to mobilize support for the two-state solution and confront attempts to undermine it and circumvent it. He welcomed the Irish candidacy for Security Council membership for 2021 and 2022.
The source added that the meeting also dealt with the dangers of destabilizing regional security in the Gulf. The Secretary-General and the Irish Minister agreed on the importance of defusing the current escalation and focusing on diplomatic solutions that preserve the security and stability of all sides, in light of adherence to the basic principles of international law, notably the non-aggression and non-interference in the internal affairs of sovereign states.
