Secretary-General of the League of Arab States Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit is following with great concern the successive and serious developments in Iraq, Spokesman for the Secretary-General Jamal Rushdie said.
He also said that the secretary-general calls on all Iraqi parties to give priority to the national interest over any other considerations in order to overcome the current situation, which represents a threat to the country's stability.
The spokesman added that the secretary-general "warns of the consequences of the situation in Iraq sliding into more violence, chaos and bloodshed."
He stressed the need for restraint and urged the protesters from different groups not to participate in armed conflict and to avoid bloodshed.
"The Arab League is following all measures taken by the Iraqi government in order to maintain peace and maintain security and stability in the country," he concluded.
