Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, received on 6 April His Excellency President Nikos Christodoulides, the President of the Republic of Cyprus, who is currently visiting Cairo.
The official spokesman for the Secretary-General, Gamal Roshdy, stated that Mr. Aboul Gheit welcomed the visit of the Cypriot president to the headquarters of the League of Arab States. He highlighted the deep-rooted historical relationship between Cyprus and the Arab world, as well as the extensive political, economic, and popular ties that bind the two sides.
The Secretary-General further stressed the importance of cooperation and coordination mechanisms that bring them together on regional and international issues of mutual interest.
The official spokesman said that Cyprus is an important partner of the League on the European continent and the European Union. He emphasised that Cyprus plays a traditional role in supporting peace, security, and stability in the region, and has consistently taken positions on the Palestinian issue and supported the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.
The meeting between the Secretary-General and the Cypriot President witnessed an exchange of views on various important regional and international issues. These included recent developments in Jerusalem, as well as the situation in Syria and Libya. The discussion also covered the repercussions of the war in Ukraine on the Arab and European regions, as well as the overall situation in the Middle East region.
The spokesman has stated that during the meeting, the Cypriot President expressed his appreciation for the important role played by the League of Arab States at the regional level and his country's keenness to strengthen the bonds of relations and fraternal ties with the Arab world. He also highlighted the convergence of visions between Cyprus and the Arab League on the importance of Arab-European relations. The Cypriot President emphasised the need to strengthen these relations and continue joint efforts to consolidate ties and aspects of cooperation between the Arab and European sides.
