Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, held a meeting with Mr. Ramtane Lamamra, the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Sudan on 30 April. The discussions were comprehensive, addressing both the evolving political and on-the-ground developments in Sudan, as well as ongoing efforts to achieve peace and bring an end to the conflict.
Gamal Roshdy, Spokesperson for the Secretary-General, noted that the Special Envoy presented a detailed briefing on the United Nations’ forthcoming action plan for Sudan, highlighting the principal obstacles facing diplomatic engagement. Mr. Lamamra also shared his assessment of the latest developments, particularly in light of the Sudanese Armed Forces’ recent reestablishment of control over the capital, Khartoum. He noted the imperative of fostering joint coordination between the United Nations and the League of Arab States to enhance the coherence and impact of international initiatives addressing the crisis.
Secretary-General Aboul Gheit reiterated the League’s unwavering support for the people of Sudan and their legitimate aspirations for peace, security, and sustainable development. He asserted the urgent need to intensify both regional and international efforts to end the hostilities and ensure the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian assistance to affected populations.
Furthermore, Mr. Aboul Gheit reaffirmed the guiding principles that underpin the League’s position on the Sudanese crisis—principles which prioritise the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of the Republic of Sudan; the preservation of Sudan’s national institutions; the rejection of all forms of external interference; and the necessity of initiating an inclusive, Sudanese-led political process that respects the country’s sovereignty while ensuring broad participation across all segments of Sudanese society.
