  • Aboul Gheit receives President of the Union of the Comoros Azali Assoumani

    Secretary-General Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit received His Excellency President Azali Assoumani, President of the Union of the Comoros, at the headquarters of the General Secretariat on 5 May. President Assoumani was accompanied by a high-level delegation as part of an official visit to the Arab Republic of Egypt.

    Gamal Roshdy, the Secretary-General’s official spokesperson, stated that Mr. Aboul Gheit welcomed the President’s visit to the League headquarters, extending congratulations on his re-election for a second presidential term. He conveyed his best wishes for continued progress, stability, and prosperity for the Comoros and its people. The spokesperson noted that President Assoumani commended the League’s historic and steadfast role in supporting its member states, defending their causes, and safeguarding their interests. The President provided an in-depth briefing on the key political, economic, and developmental initiatives currently pursued by his government, aligned with his strategic vision to achieve the nation’s renaissance and developmental goals by 2030. Both parties also exchanged views on major regional and international developments.

    The Spokesman added that President Assoumani highlighted his country’s assumption of the presidency of the Indian Ocean Commission and expressed aspirations to secure Arab support for hosting the organisation’s Olympic Games in 2027. Mr. Aboul Gheit congratulated the President on this notable sporting milestone, affirming that the Republic of the Comoros is making significant strides in the sports arena. He underscored the League’s full support to ensure the success of this important event.

    The Spokesperson further noted that the Secretary-General reaffirmed to President Assoumani the League’s commitment to supporting the Republic of the Comoros across political, economic, humanitarian, educational, and developmental spheres, in accordance with the resolutions of the League Council at both summit and ministerial levels.
