  • Occupation is the root of tension and instability in the region: Aboul Gheit
    Date: 21/06/2025

Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, is participating in the 51st session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), which convened on 21 June in Istanbul. The session is being held under the chairmanship of the Republic of Turkey and in the presence of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, with wide participation from the foreign ministers of OIC member states.

Gamal Roshdy, the Secretary-General’s official spokesperson, stated that Mr. Aboul Gheit condemned Israel’s military campaign against Iran, which disregarded all efforts to reach a diplomatic resolution. He underscored that any military targeting of nuclear facilities—especially those that could endanger civilians in or around Iran—is unacceptable, and reaffirmed the imperative of establishing a nuclear-weapon-free Middle East. In his address, Mr. Aboul Gheit also called for Israel’s accession to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), expressing confidence that a return to negotiations remains possible, provided there is unified international political will, as seen in previous efforts to resolve the Iranian nuclear issue.

The Spokesperson added that the Secretary-General stressed the importance of not losing sight of the Palestinian cause amid the current developments. He asserted that the Palestinian people continue to face daily atrocities at the hands of Israeli occupation forces, citing the killing of more than 140 Palestinians in a single day near food distribution centres that had been turned into deadly ambushes. He stressed that it is time for the international community and the UN Security Council to assume their responsibilities in halting these crimes. He further noted that there remain those who continue to use the veto power to shield the occupation and facilitate further violations.
