Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, participated on 13 November, in the annual celebration of Arab Document Day, held under the theme “The League of Arab States: Eighty Years of Joint Arab Action.” The event was organised by the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States in coordination with the Arab Regional Branch of the International Council on Archives (ARBICA). A number of distinguished figures in the field of documentation from across the Arab world attended the celebration.
Gamal Roshdy, the Secretary-General’s Spokesperson, stated that Mr. Aboul Gheit delivered a speech during the celebration, in which he stressed the importance of this initiative, adopted by the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO), to highlight the significance of Arab documents as essential pillars of the identity of nations and peoples.
In his speech, Mr. Aboul Gheit also stressed the importance of preserving the Arab documentary heritage, calling for collective efforts to protect and safeguard it by supporting all initiatives and adopting the necessary strategies and resolutions to confront the deliberate attempts to erase the history and heritage of the Arab nation.
Mr. Aboul Gheit further commended the opening of the League of Arab States' Museum Exhibition in September, noting that its collections represent a record of the history and journey of the Arab nation and stand as a living testament to eight decades of joint Arab action.
It is worth noting that a documentary exhibition entitled “The League of Arab States in the Eyes of Arab Documentation and Archives Institutions” was inaugurated on the sidelines of the celebration. The exhibition featured reproductions of documents from the archives of League member states belonging to ARBICA, relating to the League of Arab States.
During the celebration, Mr. Aboul Gheit was honoured by the awards committee as “Personality of the Year” in recognition of his distinguished efforts in supporting and preserving Arab documentary heritage and his invaluable contributions to the Arab Regional Branch of the International Council on Archives over the past decade.
