  • Arab League chief receives Riyad Al-Maliki, discusses implementation of Arab decisions on Palestine
    Date: 13/11/2022

Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, received Dr Riyad Al-Malki, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the State of Palestine, on Saturday, November 13, at the headquarters of the General Secretariat in Cairo.

The spokesman of the Arab League's Secretary-General, Jamal Rushdie, said the meeting addressed ways to follow up the implementation of the Arab decisions that were taken at the 31st Arab League Summit in Algiers, Algeria concerning the Palestinian cause, as the two parties discussed several mechanisms that ensure putting these decisions into practice.

Rushdie said that Aboul Gheit reiterated during the meeting the consensus at the last summit on supporting the Palestinian position and consolidating the steadfastness of the Palestinians in the occupied territories.

The Secretary-General of the League of Arab States stressed the importance of working in the next stage to support the Palestinian steps at the international level, especially in terms of expanding the area of recognition of the Palestinian state or working to obtain full membership in the United Nations, as well as working to revive the diplomatic track to resolve the cause at the international level, according to Rushdie.

Rushdi explained that the Algiers summit had approved the establishment of a ministerial committee to support Palestine's obtaining full membership in the United Nations, obtaining more recognition, and holding an international conference for peace and protection for the Palestinian people.

He added that the next stage would witness intense diplomatic action to translate these goals into mechanisms and executive action plans.

The spokesman said that Aboul Gheit listened to an explanation given by Al-Maliki about the results of the recent Israeli elections and their repercussions on the Palestinian people.

Aboul Gheit stressed that the international community is concerned with expressing a precise position on the plans of the Israeli extreme right and the slogans it adopts, especially those that undermine the two-state solution and destroy any foundations for a political settlement based on ending the occupation, establishing the Palestinian state, and achieving peaceful coexistence between the two peoples, Rushdi concluded.
