  • Symposium on “Supporting the rights of prisoners in the face of Israeli violations and abuse”

The Arab Palestinian Prisoner Day celebration is based on the implementation of the resolution of the Damascus Summit in 2008 to be celebrated on the seventeenth of April of each year as an expression of Arab solidarity with the Palestinian and Arab prisoners in the prisons of the Israeli occupation. Those prisoners are subjected to all severe forms of torture and methods of violating their dignity and human rights guaranteed by International Law, International Humanitarian Law, and all international charters and agreements related to prisoners that Israel (the occupying power) continues to violate.

On this occasion, the Secretariat General of the League of Arab States organized a symposium themed "Supporting the rights of prisoners in the face of Israeli violations and abuse" at the headquarters of the Secretariat General in Cairo on Wednesday, March 30, 2022, to celebrate the Arab Palestinian Prisoner Day as an Arab and international day.

    General themes of the symposium:

    1. Background on the prisoners and the Israeli violations.

This theme includes female prisoners, children, house confinement, the policy of administrative arrest, sick prisoners, violations, torture policies, and Israeli medical negligence against male and female prisoners in the prisons of the occupation.

    2. Prisoners and international law

This theme includes the rights of prisoners in International Humanitarian Law in light of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, international responsibility for violating the Third Geneva Convention relative to the Treatment of Prisoners of War in 1949, and the correct adaptation of the Palestinian prisoners' problem and how to solve it. Moreover, this theme includes the illegality of Zionist actions against Palestinian prisoners and detainees, the legal protection of prisoners in the Third Geneva Convention, and the mechanisms for protecting Palestinian prisoners within International Humanitarian Law.
