    The Arab League welcomed the announcement of the Secretary-General of the United Nations on 23 September on the agreement of the Syrian government and the Syrian negotiating body to form a constitutional committee, which will facilitate the work of the United Nations in Geneva based on Security Council resolution 2254.

    An official source at the Arab League said that Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary General of the Arab League, expressed his hope that this agreement would be a step towards reaching a comprehensive political solution that meets the aspirations of the Syrian people, ending  a bitter era of conflict and opening a new page towards building a secure and stable future for all of the Syrians as stipulated in Security Council Resolution 2254 and the Geneva 2012 Statement.

    The source added that the ministerial council of the Arab League, in its last meeting on 10/9/2019 in the resolution on the developments in the situation in Syria, confirmed the support of the efforts of the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General to Syria to resume the political process, and called on him to complete the formation of the Constitutional Committee and to hold its meetings under the auspices and supervision of the United Nations as soon as possible, and the determination of the Arab League to contribute to the UN efforts to make the Syrian negotiations under its auspices a success to end the conflict and establish peace and stability in Syria.​
