  • Promoting Arab action to mobilise more recognition of Palestine: Aboul Gheit upon receiving Mohamed Shtayyeh
    Date: 31/05/2023

Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, received Mr. Mohamed Shtayyeh, Prime Minister of the State of Palestine, and his delegation at the General Secretariat's headquarters in the Arab Republic of Egypt on 31 May.

Gamal Roshdy, the official spokesman for the Secretary-General, said the two leaders engaged in a constructive exchange of views regarding the Palestinian issue, specifically with regards to the outcomes of the Jeddah summit and the need to pursue diplomatic channels to strengthen Arab efforts towards acquiring greater international recognition for the State of Palestine.

During the meeting, Aboul Gheit shared the General Secretariat's recent consultations and its vision for diplomatic action in the future to elevate the international status of the Palestinian state and garner increased support in favour of its recognition. The Secretary-General emphasised the importance of continuing to pursue and develop ideas and initiatives that strengthen the Arab Peace Initiative, and reviewed future moves with the Prime Minister of Palestine, in coordination with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the European Union.

The spokesman also noted that the two parties agreed on the crucial need to diplomatically expose the extremist and unbridled practices of the Israeli government, highlighting the extreme right-wing nature of the government and the dangerous ideology espoused by some of its members. These practices run counter to internationally recognised foundations for achieving a desirable settlement between Israelis and Palestinians.

The meeting emphasised the dangers of such policies, which pave the way for further confrontations, oppression, and settlement expansion, including an intensification of settlers and extremists' incursions into the Holy Mosque in Jerusalem. The ultimate aim of these actions is to Judaise the city and control its holy places by altering the demographic balance.
