Within the established framework of cooperation between the League of Arab States' General Secretariat and its Social Affairs Sector, Department of Health and Humanitarian Assistance, and the Arab Red Crescent and Red Cross Organisation, a press conference was held on 14 September addressing the humanitarian situation in the Arab region, focusing on the earthquake that struck the Kingdom of Morocco and the hurricane that affected the State of Libya.
Ambassador Dr. Haifa Abu Ghazaleh, Assistant Secretary-General and head of the Social Affairs Sector, conveyed her heartfelt condolences to the Kingdom of Morocco for the earthquake's victims and to the State of Libya for those impacted by the hurricane. She commended the remarkable efforts and significant roles played by local search, rescue, and relief personnel engaged in ongoing operations within both countries.
The ambassador expressed her gratitude and appreciation to the Arab nations for their unwavering solidarity, as well as to Arab and international donor agencies, organisations, and United Nations entities for their contributions to the rescue and relief efforts aimed at assisting those affected.
Ambassador Abu Ghazaleh called upon the global community to promptly and decisively provide the full spectrum of humanitarian support necessary to alleviate the consequences of the earthquake in Morocco and the aftermath of the hurricane in Libya.
Her Excellency further underscored the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States' commitment to closely monitor the humanitarian situation in its member states. She highlighted that the Arab region confronts a multitude of humanitarian crises resulting from recent natural disasters, climate change, and armed conflicts. These have precipitated the deterioration of vital sectors in the region, including healthcare, education, and other fundamental service sectors that directly impact citizens. The prolonged crises have exerted both direct and indirect effects on all countries in the region.
