  • Aboul Gheit commends UN Security Council resolution, calls for implementing ceasefire
    Date: 25/03/2024

Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, commended the UN Security Council for successfully passing a resolution, for the first time, calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. The resolution garnered support from 14 members, with the United States abstaining.

The Secretary-General emphasised that the decision came after significant delay, following over five months of barbaric and brutal Israeli aggression against the people of the Gaza Strip.

Mr. Aboul Gheit underscored the imperative of implementing the resolution on the ground, halting military operations and Israeli aggression immediately and entirely. He also stressed the need to facilitate the entry of humanitarian aid through customary land routes, thereby mitigating the catastrophic humanitarian crisis in Gaza and averting the looming threat of famine for its people.

Gamal Roshdy, the spokesperson for the Secretary-General, elucidated that the resolution signals a notable shift in the international stance concerning the aggressive warfare in Gaza, including the stance of the United States, which opted not to exercise its veto power. He further stressed that the forthcoming phase necessitates concerted international efforts to translate this resolution into tangible actions aimed at ending bloodshed, holding the occupation accountable, and ensuring justice for its crimes.
