  • General Secretariat organises 22nd meeting of Arab Group following up on international environmental agreements on desertification, biodiversity

    The Department of Environmental Affairs and Meteorology of the Technical Secretariat of the Council of Arab Ministers Responsible for Environmental Affairs is set to convene the 22nd meeting of the Arab Group dedicated to monitoring international environmental agreements pertaining to desertification and biodiversity. The gathering will take place from 15 to 18 April at the headquarters of the League of Arab States.
    His Excellency Ambassador Dr. Ali bin Ibrahim Al-Maliki, Assistant Secretary-General and Head of the Economic Affairs Sector, affirmed that this meeting is in line with the decision of the Council of Arab Ministers Responsible for Environmental Affairs. The agenda encompasses various topics, notably the review of outcomes from conferences of the parties to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity and the Convention to Combat Desertification. Additionally, discussions will revolve around the climate change initiative launched by the General Secretariat at the League of Arab States Pavilion, focusing on nature-based solutions.
    A workshop is also slated to occur alongside the meeting, targeting negotiators involved in the desertification and biological diversity conventions. The workshop aims to prepare them for upcoming conferences of the parties in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme. Notably, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is poised to host the conference of the parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification from 2 to 13 December 2024
