  • General Secretariat marks Arab Media Day
    Date: 18/04/2024
Arab Media Day is commemorated on 21 April according to the resolution issued at the 46th session of the Council of Arab Information Ministers. This observance aligns with the objectives outlined in the Charter of the League of Arab States, the guidelines for collaborative Arab media endeavours, and the pursuit of fostering excellence and innovation.
Ambassador Ahmed Rashid Khattabi, Assistant Secretary-General and head of the Media and Communication Sector, stressed the significance of this occasion against the backdrop of ongoing Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip. He highlighted the dire humanitarian conditions faced by Gaza residents and the unwavering resilience of Palestinians in occupied territories, including Jerusalem, in their resistance against settlement practices and recurrent incursions.
Acknowledging the extraordinary challenges, Ambassador Khattabi commended the dedication and professionalism of journalists and media personnel who persistently operate amidst the harrowing circumstances. Their efforts during the tumultuous months of bombardment, which resulted in the loss of thousands of innocent lives — particularly women and children — and widespread destruction of residential areas, essential infrastructure, and places of worship, are laudable. He deplored the obstruction of humanitarian aid by the occupying forces, exacerbating the suffering of affected communities.
Furthermore, Ambassador Khattabi announced the upcoming convening of the arbitration committee for the eighth session of the Media Excellence Award on 22 April, hosted by the League of Arab States (Media and Communication Sector). This year's theme, "Communicating Crises, Disasters, and Risks," reflects the pressing need to address and raise awareness about the aftermath of Israeli aggression on Gaza. Nearly 100 submissions from member states and media organisations, focusing on the aftermath and personal narratives of this aggression, were received for consideration for the award
