In light of the growing Arab interest in consumer protection issues, the Economic and Social Council, through its Resolution 2366 adopted during the 111th Ordinary Session held on 9 February 2023, approved the establishment of Arab Consumer Protection Week, to be observed annually in March. This regional initiative aligns with World Consumer Rights Day, which has been commemorated globally since its inception in 1983.
The inaugural edition of Arab Consumer Protection Week was launched in 2023 under the auspices of the Sultanate of Oman, bearing the theme "Protecting the Young Arab Consumer to Build a Promising Generation." The second edition followed in 2024, hosted by the Kingdom of Bahrain, under the theme "Arab Women and Consumer Protection," further highlighting the integral role of various social segments in advancing consumer awareness and rights.
For 2025, the theme of World Consumer Rights Day is "A Just Transition to Sustainable Lifestyles." The theme asserts:
- The imperative to meet the legitimate needs of consumers by ensuring access to essential goods and services such as food and energy, while safeguarding public health and safety.
- The importance of making sustainable and healthy choices both available and affordable to all, avoiding undue responsibility placed solely on individual consumers.
- The need to amplify consumer voices at all levels of decision-making, including within business practices, with special attention to the rights of low-income consumers.
- The recognition that pathways to sustainable lifestyles are context-dependent, varying based on local priorities, needs, and challenges.
His Excellency Ambassador Dr. Ali bin Ibrahim Al-Maliki, Assistant Secretary-General and head of the Economic Affairs Sector, affirmed the commitment of the Economic Affairs Sector—through the Arab Economic Integration Department—to strengthening consumer protection in Arab countries. Notably, the adoption of the Guide to Consumer Protection Law within the framework of the Greater Arab Free Trade Area (GAFTA) represents a landmark step. This guide serves as the first comprehensive legislative reference to assist Arab countries in formulating or enhancing their national consumer protection laws.
Moreover, a Protocol for Cooperation in the Field of Consumer Protection among Arab states has been endorsed, aiming to bolster regional coordination and harmonise efforts. The launch of Arab Consumer Protection Week further contributes to raising public awareness of consumer rights, promoting a culture of sustainable consumption, and consolidating joint initiatives across the Arab world.
Efforts are ongoing, in close coordination with Member States, to facilitate the exchange of best practices and experiences in the field of consumer protection, thereby reinforcing the region's commitment to empowering consumers and fostering fair, inclusive, and sustainable markets.
