Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, welcomed the statement issued on 21 July by 25 countries, including 18 member states of the European Union, as well as the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Switzerland, Japan, Norway, and New Zealand, calling for an immediate end to the war on Gaza. The statement noted that “the suffering of civilians in Gaza has reached new levels of depth,” and unequivocally condemned “the inhumane killing of civilians, including children, while trying to meet their basic needs for water and food.”
Gamal Roshdy, the Secretary-General’s official spokesperson, quoted Mr. Aboul Gheit as saying that the statement reflects a global consensus rejecting the continuation of Israel's ethnic cleansing plan, which has reached unprecedented levels of dehumanisation and disregard for human life. What is needed now is to translate words into action and apply real pressure on the occupying power to stop the ongoing massacre of Palestinians in Gaza, especially after the number of victims killed outside aid distribution centers exceeded 800—shot in cold blood while waiting for the bare minimum required for survival.
The spokesperson stated that Israel is acting with extreme cruelty to implement its forced displacement strategy, through the daily killing of Palestinians and rendering their continued presence in the Strip untenable by means of starvation, denial of basic necessities, evacuation orders, and the obstruction of humanitarian aid. He added that the international community must take meaningful and effective steps to end this ongoing massacre and to confront the occupying power’s blatant, shameful, and unprecedented defiance of international humanitarian law, which disregards even the most fundamental humanitarian principles.
