Secretary-General of the League of Arab States Ahmed Aboul Gheit received Philippe Lazzarini, the Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), at the league's headquarters in Cairo.
The meeting focused on the problems the Agency is facing and the financial difficulties that have recently hindered its work, as global crises have affected the funds directed to humanitarian aid.
According to spokesman for the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States Jamal Rushdie, Aboul Gheit stressed the importance of the Agency's work, especially at this point in time, when Palestinian refugees in the five UNRWA areas of operation are facing great difficulties in light of the escalating economic crises and the deterioration of living conditions.
Secretary-General Aboul Gheit listened to a detailed explanation from Commissioner-General Lazzarini about the current financial situation at the Agency, which has a funding gap of about $100 million.
Aboul Gheit and Lazzarini discussed the best ways to bridge this gap and plans to sustain the Agency's funding in a way that ensures the services provided to Palestinian refugees in health, education, employment, and other areas are not affected.
